Area roundup: Whitworth softball sweeps doubleheader, runs win streak to eight

A pair of shutouts from Madelyn Carlson and a big day at the plate from Chelsey Hayes led the Whitworth Pirates in a pair of five-inning 8-0 wins over the Willamette Bearcats on Sunday in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader in Spokane.

Whitworth (16-8, 9-3) has won eight straight games.

Hayes went 3 for 6 with five RBIs. Kinsey McNaught went 5 for 6 and scored five runs.

Carlson (12-3) gave up two hits in each victory.

Washington 2, Arizona 0: Noell Hee homered and Taran Alvelo (16-1) gave up just a first-inning single while striking out eight as the top-ranked Huskies (32-2, 4-2 Pac-12) defeated the No. 9 Wildcats (24-6, 3-3) in Seattle.

Baseball

Arizona 9, Washington State 2: The Wildcats (13-10, 2-4 Pac-12) scored seven runs over the first two innings and went on to beat the Cougars (5-14, 1-5) in Tucson, Arizona.

JJ Hancock had three hits including a homer for WSU.

Washington 8, Oregon State 4: Joe Wainhouse had a two-run single and a solo homer, Christian Jones drove in a pair with a triple and the Huskies (11-10, 4-2 Pac-12) handed the top-ranked Beavers (20-2, 5-1) their first conference loss in salvaging the final game of the three-game series in Corvallis.

Puget Sound 6-6, Whitworth 5-15: Tyler Bailey had three hits and three RBIs and Cody Simmons three hits and two RBIs to lead Whitworth to a win over visiting Puget Sound in the finale of a three-game Northwest Conference in Spokane. The Loggers (13-11, 7-7) won Sunday’s opener, but the Pirates (12-13, 7-7) took the series 2-1.

In Sunday’s opener, Whitworth had the tying run at third base with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Dakota Marley induced a game-ending double play to preserve the victory. Liam Fitzpatrick hit a two-run homer for Whitworth.

In the second game, the Pirates jumped to a 9-1 lead after two innings. Darren Crosby (1-0) got the win with four innings of one-hit relief. Casey Isa and Simmons slugged homers.

Women’s golf

Ping/ASU Invitational: Alivia Brown finished in a three-way tie for 11th with a three-round total of even-par 216 for Washington State, which placed 10th in the 14-team field at 22 over. Jillian Hollis of Georgia was medalist at 9 under with Arizona winning the team title at 12 under.

Rowing

San Diego Crew Classic: Washington State’s second varsity eight and varsity four took fourth places while the varsity eight took a fifth in women’s grand finals races on Mission Bay.

Gonzaga’s women competed in three petite finals with the varsity eight and second varsity eight taking seconds and the varsity four a third. In a final-only race, the second varsity four was fifth.

The GU men’s varsity eight was fourth in a grand final.
