Introducing ‘Out of Right Field: Mariners Observations from the East Side’

Let me throw out the first pitch this season: If you’re a fan of the Seattle Mariners, you must check out The Spokesman-Review’s new feature, “Out of Right Field: Mariners Observations from the East Side.”

Starting with Thursday’s opener against Cleveland, our all-star lineup of writers – Vince Grippi, Dave Nichols and Gene Warnick – will put a local spin on Mariners coverage, offering commentary, analysis and insight at http://www.spokesman.com/sports/team/seattle-mariners/.

Look for their weekly column to appear in print on Sundays, starting April 8.

In addition, be sure to listen to our podcast, “The Press Box,” hosted by Larry Weir. The current podcast has our crew offering season predictions on everything from division winners to MVPs to World Series champion.

Here’s the “Out of Right Field” lineup to start the season:

Vince Grippi is a former writer and editor at The Spokesman-Review. At The S-R, he covered everything from preps to Washington State University athletics. Currently, he writes Grip on Sports, a daily column for Spokesman.com. He played catcher at UC Irvine during the Carter administration.

Dave Nichols is high school sports writer for The Spokesman-Review. He covered the Washington Nationals for a credentialed website for eight years and co-hosted a nightly postgame podcast. He covered the Mariners for Spokesman.com last season.

Gene Warnick is a copy editor at The Spokesman-Review. He covered the Mariners in the mid- to late 1990s for The Herald in Everett and again in 2017 for The Sports Xchange. As for his playing career … Gene was always named most inspirational on the team.
