Area roundup: Community Colleges of Spokane baseball opens conference play with sweep

Mitch Dean hit the go-ahead home run in the opener and Cory Wagner pitched five sharp innings in the second game Wednesday to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to an 8-5, 8-2 sweep over Wenatchee Valley (13-7, 0-2) in Northwest Athletic Conference play at Spokane Falls CC.

Dean’s go-ahead homer came during a five-run seventh as the Sasquatch (15-5, 2-0) rallied from a 5-1 deficit. Jadan Vandervert doubled and tripled to support winner Rhyse Frey, who pitched 2 2/3 innings.

Reed Harrington struck out four in two innings to earn the save. Levi Brenneman finished 2 for 3 and Jermaine Ducham went 2 for 4.

Wagner allowed four hits and no earned runs in the second game, striking out four and walking two. Reliever Connor Grytdal followed with three innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.

Vandervert finished 3 for 5 with a double, one run and one RBI. Ducham went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

College softball

George Fox 8-14, Whitworth 0-7: Aaliyah Kautz drove in four runs, and Annie Veatch and Allison Meyer homered to help the host Bruins (23-5, 14-2 Northwest Conference) complete a sweep over the Pirates (16-10, 9-5) in Newberg, Oregon.

Madison Sorensen (14-1) pitched a five-inning two-hitter, striking out nine, to guide George Fox in the opener. The Bruins supported her with five homers.

Whitworth, trailing 8-3 in the second game, pulled within one run with a four-run fourth. Kinsey McNaught had a two-run triple and scored on Michelle Silva’s single during the outburst.

The Bruins answered with a six-run fourth, capped by Veatch’s two-run homer.

The games were originally scheduled Feb. 25 in Newberg but were rained out.

Women’s golf

Idaho’s Sophie Hausmann shot a final-round, 2-under-par 70 to tie for 18th place at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Hausmann completed three rounds at 8-over 224, 12 shots behind Kaci Masuda, who captured Hawaii’s first medalist honors since 2015.

Idaho (916) placed 10th among 13 teams. Louisville and Hawaii tied for first at 879, but Louisville was awarded the team title by a tiebreaker.
