MORAGA, Calif. – Jackson Thoreson’s two-run double sparked a three-run eighth inning Thursday and Saint Mary’s held off Gonzaga 3-2 to open a three-game West Coast Conference baseball series.
Thoreson’s double down the right-field line, with no outs on a 0-2 pitch from Casey Legumina (2-2), scored Kevin Milam and Joe Vranesh for a 2-1 lead. Thoreson scored on Brett Rasso’s single to right.
Bulldogs starter Daniel Bies entered the eighth with a two-hitter. He departed after Milam led off with a single to center.
Bies struck out seven and walked one.
The Bulldogs (12-11, 3-4) loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth. Jake Vieth and Gunnar Schubert singled to right and Austin Pinori was hit by a pitch. Michael Hobbs of the Gaels (14-9, 4-3) earned the save when Nick Brooks grounded into a double play and Jace VanDeBrake grounded out to shortstop.
The Zags took a 1-0 lead in the sixth. Branson Trube doubled to left with two outs and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Gio Diaz after Vieth’s infield single.
