Area roundup: Washington State baseball defeats Arizona State in extra innings again

The Washington State Cougars are having an extra-special week.

Danny Sinatro singled to center field with one out in the 11th inning Friday, giving the Cougars a 4-3 win over Arizona State in Pac-12 baseball play in Pullman.

The Cougars (7-14, 3-5) opened the series Thursday with an 8-7 win over ASU (12-14, 4-4) in 10 innings.

JJ Hancock opened WSU’s 11th with a walk. He was sacrificed to second base and scored one batter later on Sinatro’s single off Connor Higgins (1-2).

The Sun Devils tied the game at 3 on Hunter Bishop’s solo homer in the eighth.

Blake Clanton had an RBI triple and scored on Wyatt Segle’s single to give WSU a 2-1 lead in the first.

Michael Newstrom (1-1) earned his first career win, striking out the only two batters he faced in the 11th.

Gonzaga 3, Saint Mary’s 0: Alek Jacob and Casey Legumina combined on a four-hitter and Ernie Yake had a three-run double to give the Bulldogs (13-11, 4-4) a win over the Gaels (14-10, 4-4) in the second game of a West Coast Conference series in Moraga, California.

Jacob (2-3) allowed three hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking three. Legumina earned his sixth save, checking the Gaels on one hit over 1 1/3 innings.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh on two walks and a hit batter. Yake cleared the bases with a double down the right-field line.

GU’s Gunnar Schubert went 0 for 4 and had his 17-game hitting streak snapped.

The teams will complete the series Saturday.

Washington 5, USC 2: Joe DeMers (2-1) pitched seven-plus sharp innings and Joe Wainhouse provided insurance with a two-run single in the seventh as the Huskies (12-11, 5-3 Pac-12) defeated the Trojans (13-10, 3-5) in Los Angeles.

Whitworth 5-8, Lewis & Clark 1-0: Hugh Smith (7-0) and Brady Simmelink (3-1) held the Pioneers (6-24, 3-14 Northwest Conference) in check and the Pirates (14-14, 9-8) swept a doubleheader in Portland.

Smith allowed five hits and struck out 12 in eight innings in the opener. The Pirates scored two runs during a three-run fifth on an infield error.

Simmelink allowed three hits, striking out six, in 6 1/3 innings in the second game. Tyler Bailey went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and Dalen Hainline hit a three-run homer in the seventh.

Softball

(1) Washington 10, Stanford 0 (6): Gabbie Plain (10-1) scattered three hits and struck out six in six innings, and Kirstyn Thomas went 3 for 4 with three runs to lead the top-ranked Huskies (34-2, 6-2 Pac-12) past the Cardinal (20-12, 1-4) in Stanford, California.

(25) Linfield 6-5, Whitworth 1-10: Michelle Silva finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including a solo homer during a four-run fourth, and the host Pirates (17-11, 10-6 Northwest Conference) salvaged the second game of a doubleheader against the 25th-ranked Wildcats (23-7, 15-3).

Shelby Saylors (10-5) scattered five hits and allowed no earned runs while earning a complete-game win in the opener.

In the second game, Silva added an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the sixth for an 8-5 lead. Reliever Kaylee Rosenbaum (1-1) checked Linfield on three hits over 3 1/3 innings to earn the win.

CC Spokane 14-8, Blue Mountain 6-0: Katelyn Sage finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the second, and the Sasquatch (15-5, 6-3 Northwest Athletic Conference) completed a sweep over the Timberwolves (0-20, 0-10) at Spokane Falls CC.

Melina Mendoza and Angie Porcayo had two RBIs apiece for CCS in the opener.

Sydnee Mongeon scattered four hits and struck out six in five innings in the second game.
