Becoming aware of inequality

My name is Emma Thompson and I am a student at Mead High School. As I have gotten older and matured, I have become aware of the problem of inequality, particularly gender.

In the classroom, when I or any other female try to get involved and lead a project, we’re “bossy.” However, if a male classmate decided to try to take the reins on a group assignment, he is a “leader.” I feel that it is wrong to be insecure to share an opinion, because I don’t want to be looked upon as a “know-it-all.” School should be an environment where I feel safe to share ideas, but unfortunately, it no longer is.

Another example was when my mom, Jessi Thompson, owner of RE Fitness studio, hired a construction worker to work on her new building. When he asked for tools, my mom brought out a toolbox and his response was, “It’s not pink?”

I am shocked that our city has not developed or evolved enough to grow from our country’s past. After listening to a speaker on equality I have decided to take a stand for equal rights for all people. I encourage you to do the same.
