Prep baseball playoffs: Post Falls advances to state semifinal with win over defending champs
Jake Pfennigs struck out nine in a complete game Thursday and Post Falls (15-12) beat defending champion Rocky Mountain (22-5) 8-4 in an Idaho 5A State first-round game at Borah High School.
PF’s Chase Cripps had two hits, drove in three and scored twice, and Nate Buer tripled and scored three runs. Brock Zeller pulled off a suicide squeeze play in the fifth inning to put the Trojans ahead for good.
Post Falls plays Timberline of Boise (16-10) in a semifinal on Friday at 5 p.m. Timberline knocked off Highland 17-6 in six innings in a first-round game.
Lewiston 3, Eagle 0: Kyle Van Boeyen tossed a complete-game four-hitter with five strikeouts and the Bengals (14-12) blanked the Mustangs (15-12).
Lewiston’s Chris Powell slugged a run-scoring double in the bottom of the third. Connor Stamper and Braden Ruddell each had two hits and scored once for the Bengals.
Lewiston advances to a semifinal against Bonneville on Friday at noon.
4A State
Chase Carpenter went the distance with six strikeouts and the Vallivue Falcons (24-5) defeated the Sandpoint Bulldogs (11-5) 8-3 in a first-round game at Melaleuca Field, Idaho Falls.
Gabe Childs hit 2 for 3 with a walk and three RBIs for Vallivue.
For Sandpoint, Trey Flint went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Tristan Authier pitched 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
Sandpoint plays Idaho Falls in a consolation-round game on Friday at noon.
3A State
Bonners Ferry 5, Payette 1: William Parr pitched a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts and went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and the Bonners Ferry Badgers (15-5) defeated the Payette Pirates (22-4) 5-1 in a first-round game at Treasure Valley CC in Ontario, Oregon.
After an hour-long rain delay, Shane Walker hit a two-out double in the top of the sixth to score Seth and Brady Bateman, sealing the game. Seth Bateman went 3 for 4 on the day.
The Badgers face Kimberly in a semifinal on Friday at 3 p.m.
Marsh Valley 3, Timberlake 0: The Eagles (20-3) shut out the Tigers (14-8).
Timberlake falls into a consolation-bracket game against South Fremont on Friday at noon.
