Matt Santangelo joins Press Box Podcast to talk about early years of Gonzaga’s rise to national prominence

From staff reports

Hoopfest Executive Director Matt Santangelo returned to The Spokesman-Review’s Press Box Podcast with Larry Weir on Monday to talk college basketball, specifically Gonzaga basketball.

The former Zags point guard talked about recruiting, the differences between the three head coaches he played for at GU and the moment when Gonzaga became a national power.

“We were just trying to live up to Geoff Goss and Jeff Brown … that kind of blue-collar mentality,” Santangelo said. “And then you had Adam Morrison. Adam Morrison changed the game. So now everyone wanted to come into GU and be the national player of the year (and) lead the country in scoring. Well, that’s a whole different mentality than where we were just trying to … be good stewards of this blue-collar university.”
