PULLMAN – The Washington State soccer team is in Washington, D.C., on Friday, preparing to face undefeated Georgetown at George Washington University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m.

“They (Georgetown) are probably thinking, ‘We’re at home, we’re undefeated, and we’ve got this,’ ” WSU senior defender Maddy Haro said.

WSU coach Todd Shulenberger doesn’t pretend to know what the Georgetown team is thinking, but he cautioned, “They’d be crazy not to think we’re a serious opponent.

“They haven’t played the kinds of teams we play, every game.”

Take Stanford, for instance. The reigning national champions could only manage a draw against WSU in October. UCLA, which lost to Stanford in last year’s NCAA title game, lost to the Cougars – in Los Angeles, no less – in September.

The 2016 national champion, USC, only squeaked past WSU 3-2 last month.

“Winning is hard in this league,” Shulenberger said, “and I should be sleeping better these days, but I’m not.

“When you’re winning, you want more of it. I guess that means we’re getting greedy, and I’m OK with that.”
