Area roundup: Whitworth women win big; CCS men take tourney title

Aimee Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for her first career double-double and Whitworth rolled past McMurry 71-47 on Sunday in women’s basketball.

Smith made all 12 of her free throws and also had four blocks while teammate Megan Dorney scored 14 points with five rebounds. The Pirates (3-1) were 18 of 20 from the line.

The War Hawks (0-5) took a 7-0 lead but the Pirates ended the first quarter on a 23-4 run with Dorney scoring eight points and Smith six to lead 25-12. The lead grew to 18 at the half and 21 heading into the fourth quarter, when Whitworth sat its starters.

Michigan 80, Washington 73: Nicole Munger scored 27 points, making seven 3-pointers, and the Wolverines (5-1) defeated the Huskies (3-3) in the third-place game at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida.

Amber Melgoza scored 20 points and Missy Peterson 18 for Washington.

Men’s basketball

CC Spokane 93, Everett 85: Dedrick Pakootas scored 22 points, JR Delgado added 16 and the Sasquatch (3-0) beat the Trojans (3-2) to win the Red Devils Classic in Longview, Washington.

Pakootas and Delgado each made four 3-pointers. Garrett White added 14 points and Isaiah Gotell added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Tanner McCliment-Call’s basket gave CCS the lead for good at 59-57 with just under 11 minutes to go with the Sasquatch taking their largest lead of 12 with 6:43 remaining.

CCS didn’t have a field goal in the last 5 1/2 minutes, instead making 14 of 16 from the line, the final six made by Pakootas.
