New Spokane bread baker launches Go Fund Me campaign

The Spokane-based Bread by Glorious has launched a Go Fund Me campaign to secure space and equipment to allow proprietor Leo Walters to bake bread full time.

So far, Walters has raised $1,630 of his $10,000 goal.

He’s been baking evenings at Madeleine’s Cafe and Patisserie in downtown Spokane but dreams of having his own bake shop.

Walters specializes in rustic, naturally leavened loaves made from flour from Shepherd’s Grain.

His loaves can be found at Huckleberry’s Natural Market on South Monroe Street. Soon, he said, they will also be available at My Fresh Basket in Kendall Yards as well as Ladder Coffee & Toast in Browne’s Addition and Perry Street Brewing in the South Perry District.

Walters, 39, launched Bread by Glorious in summer, selling loaves at the Liberty Lake Farmers Market. In addition to a rustic country loaf, he makes toasted walnut and cranberry bread as well as fig and fennel bread and experimental loaves.

He plans to use 60 percent of the money raised through Go Fund Me for leasing his own space. The rest he plans to split evenly between a commercial mixer and a commercial oven.

He hopes to use his commercial kitchen as a community-building place to help promote work and life skills with people such as veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Contributors can receive the following: a loaf of bread, an artisan bread baking class, a day in the bakery, a sourdough starter or a Glorious die-cut sticker.

Bread, Walters wrote on his Go Fund Me page, “is the perfect catalyst to pull us back together. To bring us back to the table. To connect over food. To connect simply. To connect authentically.”
