Cheney police use beanbag gun to shoot and arrest man wielding knives in street

Police shot a man with a non-lethal beanbag round on Wednesday in Cheney when he refused to drop two large knives he was holding in the middle of a street while walking toward officers.

The man is known to have mental health issues, said Cheney Police Captain Rick Beghtol, and during the confontation did not obey officers’ commands to drop the weapons.

Police arrested the man, Jacob Parker, 32, at about 1:25 p.m. on the 300 block of North 3rd Street. He was transported to a nearby hospital, Beghtol said.

“It’s about as good of an outcome as we could ask for,” he said. “We’d prefer not to shoot him at all.”
