Prep notebook: Volleyball, soccer, slowpitch softball seasons wind down toward districts

It’s mid-October, so district playoffs are starting in Washington and Idaho teams are headed to state playoffs. Here’s a roundup of where volleyball, slowpitch softball and soccer stand.

Volleyball

The Greater Spokane League 4A regular-season title – as well as seeding for districts – is still up for grabs with one game to go. Mead, Gonzaga Prep and University are all at 6-2. Lewis and Clark is one game behind and Ferris is 4-4.

The last seed might not be decided until Tuesday when LC hosts Mead.

The top four qualify for the District 8 4A tournament starting Nov. 1.

In 3A, Mt. Spokane (8-0), which is ranked third in state by the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association (WSVBCA), earned the top seed in the 3A tournament. North Central (2-6) is the second seed and Shadle Park (0-8) hosts Rogers (0-8) on Thursday to determine the third seed.

Pullman is the No. 1 in state 2A, leads the Great Northern League by three games and will host the league tourney, which runs Oct. 25-27. The top two qualify for crossover matches against Central Washington Athletic Conference teams on Nov. 3.

Freeman is ranked fourth in state 1A and Lakeside is No. 5. The pair are tied for the Northeast A League lead at 10-1 with one game to play. Freeman hosts Colville (8-3) and Lakeside is at Newport (4-7) on Thursday.

The NEA tournament runs Oct. 25-27. The winner qualifies for state while second and third place face crossover matches against Caribou Trail League teams on Nov. 3.

The District 7 2B tournament runs Oct. 25-Nov. 1 at St. George’s with the top four teams qualifying for state. Northwest Christian (9-1) leads the North Division and is ranked No. 3 in state. No. 4 Colfax (8-1) is tops in the South.

In Idaho, top-seeded Lake City (15-0) won the 5A district title on Tuesday and No. 2 Coeur d’Alene (8-4) faces Lewiston (1-6) on Thursday for a trip to a state play-in game.

Sandpoint hosts the 4A district title match on Thursday against Moscow. Top-seeded Timberlake takes on Kellogg in the 3A district title game on Thursday.

Slowpitch

The regular season ended on Tuesday with University (20-0) securing the top seed and a first-round bye to the district playoffs. Mt. Spokane (16-4) beat Lewis and Clark 7-5 on Tuesday to earn the second seed. U-Hi and Mt. Spokane will host semifinal games on Monday.

In first-round games on Thursday, third-seeded Mead (15-5) hosts No. 6 Central Valley (11-9) and fourth-seeded Rogers (13-7) hosts No. 5 seed Lewis and Clark (11-9) in elimination games. The top three at districts qualify for the state tournament.

Girls soccer

Central Valley (24 points), Gonzaga Prep (18) and Mead (17) are at the top of GSL 4A. Mt. Spokane has the 3A lead with 12 points after a win over Lewis and Clark on Wednesday.

The District 8 girls 4A and 3A soccer tournaments run Oct. 27-Nov. 3. Three teams in 4A and two in 3A qualify for state.

East Valley (9-1-0-0) defeated winless Pullman 3-0 on Tuesday to clinch the Great Northern League title. The GNL tourney is Oct. 25-30, with two teams qualifying for crossover games on Nov. 3.

Deer Park (11-0-0-0) clinched the NEA regular-season title on Tuesday. The Northeast A tournament is Tuesday through Oct. 30. The winner advances to state while second and third place qualify for crossover games on Nov. 3.

In Idaho, the state seeds were settled last weekend and all first-round games are on Thursday.

In 5A, top-seeded Lake City beat second-seeded Coeur d’Alene 3-0 in the district title game on Oct. 9. CdA fell to Borah in the state play-in game on Saturday. Lake City (13-2-0) faces Eagle (10-7-0) in the first round of state at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.

Top-seeded Sandpoint (10-3-1) beat Moscow (4-5-3) 2-0 in the 4A district title game on Oct. 10 and will take on Vallivue (11-6-1) at Lake City HS.

In the 3A district title game on Saturday, top-seeded Coeur d’Alene Charter (17-0-0) topped No. 2 seed Timberlake (12-4-1) 2-1 as both qualified for state. CdAC faces Teton (11-5-0) and Timberlake clashes with Sun Valley Community (18-0-0) at Sunway Soccer Complex in Twin Falls.

Boys soccer

In 5A, Lake City (14-0-0) blanked Coeur d’Alene (10-4-0) 3-0 in the district title game on Oct. 10. CdA advanced to state with a win over Skyview (6-9-4) in the play-in game on Saturday. Lake City faces Boise (16-2-1) and CdA takes on Rocky Mountain (13-2-1) at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.

Moscow (4A), Timberlake (3A) and Bonners Ferry (3A) also qualified for state.
