Chiefs fall in overtime at Saskatoon, 3-2

From staff reports

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan – Kirby Dach scored on a rebound 37 seconds into overtime Friday night as the Saskatoon Blades defeated the Spokane Chiefs 3-2 in a WHL game at the SaskTel Centre.

Dach’s winner, his second goal of the game, came just after Luke Toporowski hit the post at the other end of the ice.

Toporowski scored the Chiefs’ first goal, tying the game at 1 with less than 2 minutes left in the first period, off a rebound from the right circle. Ty Smith’s assist, his 14th, ran his points streak to nine games.

Smith’s one-timer from the point at the 7:19 mark of the second, on a 5-on-3 power play, gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead. Dach tied it with 1 second remaining in the period.

Outshot 15-8 in the first period, Spokane outshot Saskatoon 34-16 over the final two. The Blades outshot the Chiefs 2-1 in OT.

The Chiefs’ first overtime loss dropped their record to 6-2-1-2, good for 15 points. They continue to lead the WHL’s U.S. Division by two points over Seattle. The six-game road trip, their longest of the season, concludes tonight at 6 against the Prince Albert Raiders, the CHL’s No. 1 team.
