Prep morning roundup: Katie Benjamin’s 78th-minute header advances Shadle Park past Southridge

Katie Benjamin headed in the winner off a corner kick in the 78th minute and visiting sixth-seeded Shadle Park (4-10-1) came back from down 2-0 to edge third-seeded Southridge (9-7-0) 3-2 in a District 8 3A first-round match on Thursday.

Shadle Park advances to play second-seeded Mt. Spokane on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Spokane.

Volleyball

East Valley 3, West Valley 0: Kiara Brandvold had 11 kills and the fifth-seeded Knights beat the second-seeded Eagles in straight sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) in a District 7 2A first-round match.

Cross country

NEA Districts: It was a successful day for the Lakeside (WA) Eagles who won both the boys and girls team titles at the Chewelah Golf Course.

Lakeside junior Gideon Swanson led the boys field with a time of 16:42.34, beating Riverside’s senior Zach Pace by almost four seconds.

Alaina Stone, a junior from Colville, finished first in the girls race with a time of 18:21.83. Lakeside’s Madelyn Buckley was the top runner for the Eagles, crossing the finish line at 19:30.18.
