Home invasion turns fatal as resident shoots and kills armed intruder near Post Falls

A man was killed early Monday morning near Post Falls in what Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies are describing as a home invasion that turned into a fatal shooting.

Deputies said that about 1:30 a.m. they were called to a residence in the 900 block of South Spokane Street south of Post Falls, where they discovered a 24-year-old man dead inside a home from gunshot wounds, according to a department news release.

Deputies said it appeared as though the man broke into the home and woke up a man and woman who were sleeping inside. The male resident apparently discovered the intruder as he was damaging his property and told him to leave.

But deputies said after ignoring the commands and “aggressing” toward the two, the male resident fired several rounds from his handgun at the intruder, who was armed.

Deputies are continuing to investigate. No arrests have been made.
