Multiple people were injured after an altercation involving gunshots Thursday night in north Spokane.
Shortly before 8 p.m., several people engaged in a fight in front of a residence on North Calispel Street, police say. One man was injured during the fight and the other entered the residence to retrieve a weapon, said Cpl. Ron Van Tassel, Spokane Police Department spokesman. One of the men fired a weapon at the victims, who had retreated to a white Ford explorer, injuring a woman inside the vehicle.
Van Tassel said the Explorer drove a few blocks away and pulled over to wait for medical assistance. Van Tassel said the woman who was shot was awake and conscious, but he did not know how serious her injuries were. He said the shooting suspects were detained.
Multiple weapons found in the residence, and police are still not sure what gun may have been used during the shooting, but witnesses said they saw a rifle, Van Tassel said.
Neighbors, such as Lori Hansen who was on her way to water her yard when she heard gunshots, said violent crime is unusual for the neighborhood. She’s lived in the neighborhood for 35 years and things have mostly felt calm and safe.
“It’s pretty rare that we have any kind of excitement,” she said.
