Republicans not the party of law and order

There are few things that shock me in politics, but the words of Devin Nunes on the leaked tape from Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ fundraising event in Spokane did.

Nunes is an extraordinarily inarticulate man, but, nonetheless, he laid out a scenario of conspiracy with a hostile foreign nation which would constitute criminality in his mind regarding actions by or on behalf of President Trump. He implied that if Mueller found and presented evidence of such criminality, it was necessary for the Republican electorate to elect Republican representatives in order to “protect” Trump. (Having the necessary numbers in Congress to impeach Rosenstein would allow Trump to find someone loyal to him to replace Rosenstein and fire Mueller).

It was shocking enough for him to say it, but the fact that our local representative McMorris Rodgers seemed to endorse this line of reasoning was even more shocking. Attendees of the fundraiser apparently didn’t feel that efforts to protect a potentially treasonous and criminal sitting president from normal legal consequences was serious business (since no one present objected).

I’m deeply concerned and frightened that our local Republican leadership is encouraging such blatant disrespect for our nation’s rule of law. Vote McMorris Rodgers out!
