No longer united

John McCain’s appeal to both sides of the aisle in Congress to resume engaging in negotiation and compromise reminds me of the brief period, following the 9/11 attacks, when our watchword became “United We Stand.”

Instead, we now seem to exemplify just the opposite of that spirit, as our discourse degenerates into increasingly rancorous and paralyzing disunity.

If we are no longer worthy of the great gift, given us by this nation’s founders, and for which so many of our fellow citizens died fighting to preserve, can the loss of democracy be far behind?
