Cheney officers who shot knife-wielding man outside of grocery store identified

The Cheney Police Department has identified the three officers who shot and killed a man outside of a Cheney grocery store on Sept. 3.

Officers Zebulon Campbell and Nicole Burbridge and reserve officer Nicholas Horn fired multiple times at 40-year-old Steve L. Anderson as he moved toward officers with a knife near the front door of Mitchell’s Harvest Foods, at 116 W. First Street. The Spokane County Medical Examiner ruled Anderson died of multiple gunshot wounds.

According to a department news release, Campbell has been with the police department since 2006; prior to that, he was with the Eastern Washington University Department. Burbridge, who in November will have been an officer in Cheney for one year, was with the Spokane Police Department for a year before coming to Cheney late last year.

Horn, the department said, has been with the Cheney PD for about a year after completing his academy training.

An Eastern Washington University police officer was also at the scene but did not fire his or her weapon, police said.
