DUI crash near Elk totals two vehicles, injures three people

A crash in northern Spokane County totaled two vehicles and sent three people to the hospital Thursday night, and one man was charged with driving under the influence.

The Washington State Patrol said Jeremiah R. Olson, 39, of Spokane, stopped his Nissan pickup truck while driving westbound on Westwood Avenue at Highway 2, then attempted to make a left turn onto the highway, crossing the northbound lane in front of a Toyota Prius carrying two people: driver Wendy Long and passenger Katherine S. Long, both of Elk.

The two vehicles collided and the crash was reported shortly after 9 p.m. Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene. The WSP reported all three people had been wearing seatbelts and were taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

A hospital spokeswoman said Olson was in satisfactory condition Friday afternoon after undergoing a procedure. Wendy Long, 44, had been treated and released. Katherine Long, 21, remained in the hospital Friday afternoon, but she was still under evaluation and her condition was not immediately available, the spokeswoman said.

Olson faces a charge of driving under the influence and received a traffic citation for failure to yield.
