Definition of ‘liberal’

I had to laugh at the letter submitted by Valerie Derks (“‘Liberal’ is a lovely word,” Sept. 6).

If the definition of a liberal was simply being tolerant of other people’s views I’d be all for it, but that’s hardly the case. The left continues to prove time and time again how intolerant they actually are. Liberal universities refuse to allow conservative speakers on campus, there’s a protest or boycott or vandalism directed at anyone who dares to disagree with their views … the list goes on and on.

The true definition is: Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems.

Liberals are all up in arms because the election didn’t turn out the way they expected it to. Welcome to the real world, crybabies.
