Area roundup: No. 9 Cougars blank Beavers to remain undefeated in women’s soccer

Maegan O’Neill netted her fourth goal of the season, knocking in a rebound in the first half, and Maddy Haro notched her first goal of the season on a free kick in the second half to propel the ninth-ranked Washington State Cougars to a 2-0 victory over the Oregon State Beavers in Pac-12 Conference play on Sunday in Pullman.

The Cougars (10-0 overall, 3-0 Pac-12) remained tied for first place with Stanford in conference play. Oregon State (1-10, 0-3) managed just five shots on goal in the match, while the Cougars peppered the field with 34 shot attempts.

WSU goalkeeper Rachel Thompson had to make just one save en route to the shutout. The Cougars had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks and committed seven fouls to Oregon State’s 13.

Next up for the Cougars is a road trip to play the Colorado Buffaloes on Thursday.

Volleyball

Taylor Mims had a match-high 23 kills, while McKenna Woodford and Ella Laios chipped in with 18 and 13 kills, respectively, to power the 22nd-ranked Washington State Cougars to a 21-25, 32-20, 25-19, 26-24 victory over the 23rd-ranked Colorado Buffaloes in Pac-12 Conference action in Pullman.

Jocelyn Urias had four service aces and three blocks to lead the Cougars (11-3 overall, 2-2 Pac-12), while Ashley Brown totaled 57 assists. Brown also had a match-high 16 digs with Mims and Olivia Coale added 11 and 10, respectively.

Justine Spann and Anyse Smith topped the Buffaloes (9-6, 1-3) with 15 kills, while Alexa Smith contributed 13.

Danielle Price had a match-high six blocks for Colorado.

Washington State returns to action on Friday when it travels to Arizona State to take on the Sun Devils in another Pac-12 tilt.

Nine of the 12 teams in the conference are ranked in the Top 25, led by Stanford, which trails only top-ranked BYU. The Washington Huskies are ranked 13th – tied with USC.
