Record Store Day brings vinyl fans to 4000 Holes, the Long Ear in droves

Bob Gallagher, owner of 4000 Holes, had never before had an entire pallet of records delivered to his store, but, thanks to Record Store Day, there’s a first time for everything.

Since 2008, Record Store Day, held this year on Saturday, has brought vinyl aficionados and new fans alike to independent record stores across the world to dig through the crates for RSD exclusives.

Gallagher ordered more than 400 separate Record Store Day releases this year.

“We spend enough to buy a small new car,” he said.

Both Gallagher and Joel May of the Long Ear in Coeur d’Alene said the stores are packed the entirety of Record Store Day.

“Behind the counter it becomes a blur,” May said about the constant stream of customers.

Both Gallagher and May also say their customers are an eclectic bunch, buying everything from jazz and blues to classical rock.

“We have people of every demographic and age group coming in and looking for something,” May said.

Record Store Day has aided the resurgence in popularity records have experienced over the years, though Gallagher always knew, even after CDs became popular, that records would eventually come back into style.

“Though I always knew records would come back, I was never expecting them to be as popular as they are now,” he said. “And to have Record Store Day, the best day of the year, it’s been great.”

Marshall McLean will perform at 4000 Holes at 3 p.m., and the Long Ear will have mystery vinyl grab bags and coffee from Calypsos Coffee Roasters.
