Democracy is not enough

Granted that, as Mr. Haggin clearly points out (Capitalism vs. democracy,” April 8), the government and the main media are “almost completely influenced by those with enormous power and wealth.” Then what difference does it really matter even if “we still have some control over the election system”? As long as the government and mass media are so controlled, how and what our education system teaches us to think and what the people primarily depend upon for its sources of information are also controlled by the same powers that be.

Democracy is famously dependent on an electorate that is well educated in history and civics, accurately informed of current events and capable of rational thought. Hitler was elected democratically.
