A belief in decency

We are a warring nation. A culture of violence and reactionism that longs for a return to the “good ole days.” A closer look at the “good ole days” by those wiser than myself reveals the cracks in a culture that did not honor “freedom and equality for all.”

We do not have a history with the purpose of “all are created equal.” We embrace the “War on Drugs,” the “War on Poverty,” the “Culture War.” Name the cause and there is the word “War.” Can we imagine a country that replaces “War” with “Dedication to right action and healing”?

Now we react to the border crisis with “bullying mentality” and fear portending the “Boogie Man” is coming to get you and will be here at any moment.

We have a president who doesn’t set “policy” and surround himself with creative minds, the well-educated and big hearts, but who reacts over and over again with failed agendas. His cohorts are high-priced bullies and thugs. Do we accept the premise we will need “two years” to find the children that were displaced from their families without a hue and cry of the deeply unacceptable?

We certainly do need a broad view of immigration and the core issues of violence and corruption. We need global political strategies that pressure countries, ourselves included, to “do the right thing.” We need a core fundamental belief in decency that is evident in our own home country and spreads across the global community through our actions.
