Adoption gets short shrift

I was glad to see Cynthia Allen’s April 13 opinion piece, “An unflinching look at abortion,” on the film “Unplanned.” My only sadness is toward the end, when Cynthia says, “they will understand as Johnson eventually does that the best way to help women is to support them during their pregnancies and as mothers in the years after.”

My brain immediately screamed, “What about adoption?” I’ve long held that through movies, television and stories, adoption get short shrift. Seems there’s only two choices? It is very understandable that any woman, surprised by pregnancy and that “inconvenience,” would be overwhelmed and would choose the option that is most convenient, even if both scare them.

There is a middle ground! It would only cost perhaps eight months of their life rather than the entirety, and it allows you to give life, and not end life, should you be repulsed by the “easier” choice. I hope it would. There should be a national campaign that lifts up adoption as a valid choice when a pregnancy is unplanned and inconvenient. Let’s hear from adopted children that are grateful for their birth mom’s sacrifice!
