Help those who help

Per the letter posted by Mr. Thomas Serafini (“Path to destruction,” April 14), I believe he is spot on. Recently the actions by the City Council have made loitering (to linger aimlessly or as if aimless in or about a place) legal in such places as City Hall and city parks. With the weather warming up, B.A. Clark, Mission and Franklin parks will be places where these folks will gather and I truly feel empathy for the city parks employees who are tasked with keeping these areas clean.

I suggest that those who feel the need to help the homeless direct that help to one of the best agencies in Spokane, the Union Gospel Mission. Their web site states the following: “To end homelessness, we must go beyond free meals and safe beds to the underlying causes.” This agency has been around since 1951 and offers food and shelter, job training and with recovery. Donations can be made online and 88 cents of every dollar goes directly into homeless services.
