Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Mariners’ 6-3 loss to the San Diego Padres

Franmil Reyes hit two home runs as the San Diego Padres defeated the visiting Mariners 6-3 Tuesday night.

Austin Hedges also homered for the Padres.

San Diego’s Nick Margevicius (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits in five innings. He walked five and struck out four.

The Mariners’ Erik Swanson (0-2), making his second big-league start, went 5 2/3 innings. Swanson allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Reyes hit a two-run homer in the second inning, giving the Padres a 3-0 lead.

The Mariners pulled within 3-2 in the fifth on a two-run single by Tim Beckham.

Hedges and Reyes both homered in a three-run sixth as the Padres pulled away.

Of note

Since the start of interleague play in 1997, the M’s have the second-best ERA in games between American and National league teams with a a mark of 3.83 entering Tuesday. They trailed only the New York Yankees (3.79). … The M’s are 3-2 on their six-game trip that concludes Wednesday.

By the numbers

1: The number of road games in which the Mariners have failed to score five runs. Tuesday’s was the first this season.

Our take from Right Field

M’s center fielder Mallex Smith has already taken a couple of home runs away from opposing batters. Tuesday night he gave up one. Smith went back to the wall and leaped for a fly hit by Hedges. The ball glanced off Smith’s glove near the top of the wall and over the fence.

The Mariners will wrap up their two-game series in San Diego with a 12:40 p.m. game Wednesday at Petco Park. RHP Felix Hernandez (1-1, 4.91 ERA) is scheduled to face Padres RHP Chris Paddack (0-1, 2.25).
