Police investigate Monday shooting on Interstate 90 that stemmed from drug deal

Spokane Police Department detectives are investigating a drive-by shooting on Interstate 90 that sent one man to the hospital early Monday. Detectives have no suspects.

The shooting, according to court documents, followed a marijuana purchase at about 1 a.m. Monday near the Fred Meyer on South Thor Street.

Dennis Leiter, 35, was driving Melissa Church, 38, in a blue Nissan Titan truck. Leiter dropped off Church near the Fred Meyer and she reportedly left on foot to buy marijuana.

Leiter later picked up Church and the two drove west on I-90. He reported a dark-colored sedan approaching, driven by a black male with a white male with a goatee in the passenger seat.

The passenger fired a handgun at the truck seven to eight times, according to court documents.

According to court documents, Leiter was shot in his left side above his hip, but he kept driving and exited I-90 and drove to the hospital. He did not receive life-threatening injuries, according to court records.

Detectives are searching the marijuana bag for fingerprints and attempting to identify the man who dealt drugs to Church, according to court records.
