Gonzaga baseball upsets No. 3 Oregon State in Corvallis

From staff reports

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Troy Johnston smacked a two-run home run, Nick Trogrlic-Iverson pitched five effective innings, and Gonzaga hung on to defeat No. 3 Oregon State 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Johnston’s drive in the third inning off Dylan Pearce (1-2), followed an RBI single by Guthrie Morrison, staking the Bulldogs (24-17) to a 3-0 lead.

Trogrlic-Iverson (2-2) yielded a solo homer to Adley Rutschman in the fourth, but allowed only one other hit. Michael Spellacy pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, with four strikeouts.

Gonzaga added to its lead in the seventh inning, when Daniel Frederickson and Austin Pinorini scored on a throwing error and passed ball, respectively. Ernie Yake scored on a balk in the eighth.

The Beavers (31-11-1) threatened in the ninth, as Zack Zalesky doubled in two runs before Oregon State loaded the bases. But Daniel Naughton struck out pinch-hitter Greg Fuchs, giving Gonzaga its fifth straight victory.

Yake reached base four times and scored twice for the Bulldogs, while Johnston’s home run was his seventh of the season.
