Kenya inquest says police killed baby in poll protest

NAIROBI, Kenya – An inquest in Kenya says five police officers are liable for the death of a six-month-old baby who was hit by baton-wielding police during skirmishes following the disputed 2017 presidential election.

Magistrate Beryl Omollo recommended Thursday that the director of public prosecutions treat 46 other police officers as persons of interest.

She said the five should be held responsible for the baby’s death based on the principle of command responsibility in the National Police Service as they were in charge of the operation on the night of August 11, 2017.

At least 92 people died in clashes with police during protests over President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win in the August 2017 election and repeat election in October after the Supreme Court nullified the first poll citing illegalities and irregularities.
