No longer as proud
Sixty-six years ago during the Korean War I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps (Service #1439178). When I took the oath to defend this country against all enemies foreign and domestic, it was the proudest I had ever felt. A decade earlier my three uncles (Lawrence, Ray and Willis) had served during WWII.
A decade later a younger brother (Robt Uyesaka) died during the Tet offensive in Vietnam. He was a Green Beret and his name is on the wall in D.C. We were all proud of this country and willing to defend it against all enemies foreign and domestic, and willing to die in so doing.
But now as I approach my 87th year and being the senior member of the family, I am no longer as proud. I will not willingly allow our young people to kill, much less die, for this president. In my mind, I am still defending the country and the values for which it stands against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
