Of the 28 Eastern Washington teams that qualified for the regional round of state basketball over the weekend, 27 advanced to games at state venues – including nine that won a loser-out game to get there.

Five Greater Spokane League teams qualified for quarterfinal games on Thursday, avoiding a first-round loser-out game on Wednesday: Gonzaga Prep and Mt. Spokane boys earned No. 2 seeds in 4A and 3A respectively; Lewis and Clark and Central Valley girls are seeded Nos. 3 and 4 in 4A, while Mt. Spokane is the second seed in 3A.

The highest protected seed to fall into a first-round loser-out from regional play was in 2A, as the second-seeded East Valley girls fell to Washougal 52-45 on Saturday at University HS, and must Wednesday.

Five area schools qualified boys and girls teams to state venues: Mt. Spokane (3A), Clarkston (2A), Liberty (2B), St. George’s (2B) and Almira/Coulee-Hartline (1B).

The area has one No. 1 seed: the Colton girls, who have won 10 of the last 11 1B state titles.

There are three defending state champions from Eastern Washington in the brackets: 4A Gonzaga Prep boys and Central Valley girls, and 1B Colton girls. Four runners-up from last year also qualified: St. George’s boys (2B), ACH boys (1B), Davenport girls (2B) and Pomeroy girls (1B).

All Wednesday games are loser-out. Thursday games are quarterfinals, with losers moving to consolation brackets. The 4A/3A games are at the Tacoma Dome, 2A/1A at the Yakima SunDome and 2B/1B at the Spokane Arena.
