Prep basketball: Small-school leagues have titles up for grabs across region

Most leagues only have a few games remaining before district tournaments will determine berths to state. The last two weeks of the regular season will decide league titles across the area.

Boys

1A: Deer Park (17-1, 9-1; No. 9) suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday, a 57-56 decision to Newport (14-2, 8-2; No. 6), but still holds a one-game lead over the Grizzlies with two to play. The Stags finish against Medical Lake (5-11, 4-5) and at Lakeside (10-7, 5-4). Newport hosts Medical Lake and plays at Riverside (5-12, 1-8).

2B: St. George’s (15-2, 7-0), by virtue of a 54-43 win in its annual rivalry game against Northwest Christian (12-5, 5-2; No. 15) on Friday, has a two-game lead with three to play over NWC in the North Division. The Dragons hold the No. 1 spot in 2B over Kittitas and Gonzaga commit Brock Ravet. St. George’s beat Kittitas 76-66 in November. In the South, Colfax (13-4, 7-1) is rated No. 4 and Liberty (11-6, 6-1) is No. 10

1B: Odessa (14-1, 10-1; No. 3) and Almira/Coulee-Hartline (12-3, 9-1; No. 5) have split their season series in the Northeast 1B South. Cusick (11-5, 10-3) and Selkirk (10-7, 9-3) split in the North. In the Southeast, Garfield-Palouse (10-7, 8-1) will face Oakesdale (11-6, 8-1) on Feb. 2, which could decide the title.

Girls

1A: Freeman (13-4, 8-1; No. 10) and Medical Lake (12-5, 8-1; No. 13) have three games to play, culminating with their showdown on Jan. 31. ML won the first meeting on Jan. 11, a 45-37 decision in which Jaxyn Farmer scored 15 points and Medical Lake held Freeman to 14 points in the second half.

2B: Northwest Christian (14-3, 6-1; No. 7) and Davenport (13-3, 5-1; No. 4) split their season series in the North. NWC might have a little tougher road down the stretch, but Davenport has an extra game to get through. In the South, Liberty (16-2, 7-1; No. 6) faces Colfax (10-7, 6-2) on Feb. 1. The Bulldogs beat the Lancers 44-40 on Jan. 4.

1B: Colton (13-2, 8-0; No. 1) has a two-game lead over Pomeroy (12-2, 6-2; No. 2) in the Southeast with four to play. The Wildcats swept the series with a 58-31 win on Saturday as Dakota Patchen scored 24 points. Selkirk (10-7, 9-3) and ACH (14-1, 11-0; No. 3) have multigame leads in the Northeast North and South, respectively.

Idaho polls

The latest Idaho media basketball polls were released earlier in the week. North Idaho boys teams ranked were Post Falls (5A, No. 5), Wallace (1AD1, No. 2) and Genesis Prep (1ADII, No. 3). Girls teams ranked were Lake City (5A, No. 2), Timberlake (3A, No. 1), Bonners Ferry (3A, No. 4) and Genesis Prep (1ADII, No. 5)
