Man trapped, pronounced dead at scene of single-vehicle collision south of Long Lake

A man was trapped and later pronounced dead Friday afternoon when his vehicle crashed in northwestern Spokane County.

Spokane County sheriff’s deputies say at about 12:45 p.m. they received a call from witnesses describing a vehicle on its side not far from the east side of Wood Road, near Martha Lane, about 13 miles south of the Long Lake Dam picnic area.

Responding deputies and medical personnel found a man trapped inside the SUV, deputies wrote in a news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cpl. Mark Gregory said it appeared the man was traveling south on Wood Road when he began to drive off the west side of the roadway. He then overcorrected and veered east, crossing the northbound lane before leaving the roadway, where his SUV began to roll.

Gregory said it was unclear whether the man was wearing a seat belt. A cause is under investigation.

Wood Road was briefly closed Friday afternoon.

The man’s identity has not been released.
