Woman, 50, dies in ATV crash near Hayden

A 50-year-old woman died Wednesday afternoon after she lost control of her ATV and tumbled down an embankment near Hayden.

Christina L. Mathews, of Rathdrum, was riding along U.S. Forest Service roads in the Hayden Creek area when she crashed, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident was reported around 1:55 p.m. The four-wheeler also rolled down the embankment and landed on Mathews, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies responded along with personnel from Northern Lakes Fire and Rescue. Attempts to revive Mathews were unsuccessful.

The sheriff’s office didn’t say if Mathews was alone at the time of the crash. She was wearing a helmet, and the sheriff’s office said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
