Maxwell Morales keys Spokane Indians big inning in win over Salem-Keizer

From staff reports

Keizer, Oregon – Maxwell Morales hit a two-run homer in a seven-run fourth inning and the Spokane Indians beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 12-7 in the first of a four-game Northwest League series at Volcanoes Stadium on Monday.

The Indians led 2-0 early then blew it open in the fourth.

DH Scott Kapers was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to lead it off and Morales – who won the Indians preseason home run derby – took one to the opposite field in right-center for his first homer – and hit – of the season.

Later, No. 9 hitter Stanley Martinez drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI double by Obie Ricumstrict (3 for 4, three RBIs, two walks, stolen base).

S-K starter Clay Helvey’s night ended after his sixth walk – to Ryan Anderson – with two down in the inning.

The first pitch by reliever Travis Perry was missed by catcher Ricardo Genoves and Ricumstrict scampered home. Anderson later scored on a throwing error, then Jonah McReynolds doubled to plate another run.

McReynolds later scored on a balk and wild pitch to make it 9-0.

Indians starter Luis Rosario ran out of gas in the fifth as he gave up four runs and allowed the Volcanoes to hit for the cycle in the inning. Nic Laio was awarded the win despite allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings.

The Indians added three in the seventh, including Anderson’s two-run double.
