Vancouver Canadians blank Spokane Indians to end seven-game losing streak

From staff reports

VANCOUVER, B.C. – There’s one sure way to break a long losing streak: Don’t let the other team score.

Gabriel Ponce and Randy Pondler combined on a four-hitter Saturday and the Vancouver Canadians (4-12) snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 4-0 Northwest League win over the Spokane Indians at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Pondler (2-1) pitched the final 5 1/3 innings, holding the Indians to two singles and a double. Pondler had allowed five earned runs in six innings during his other two appearances for the Canadians.

Vancouver, protecting a 1-0 lead, took control with a three-run seventh. Tanner Morris had an RBI double and scored on Yorman Rodriguez’s two-run double.

Indians starter Teodoro Ortega (1-1) allowed four hits and one earned run in four innings, striking out two and walking none.

Entering the game, Ortega had worked eight scoreless innings this season, allowing three hits.

Ryan Anderson went 2 for 3 for the Indians.

North Division-leading Spokane (10-6) was blanked for the second time this season. The Indians are 3-2 against Vancouver this season and 6-3 on the road.

The rubber game of the three-game set is Sunday afternoon.

Spokane leads Tri-City and Everett by two games. Tri-City defeated Everett 5-0 on Saturday as four pitchers combined on the third no-hitter in T-C history and the first in the league in four years.
