College baseball: Matthew Young carries no-hitter into 9th, Whitworth sweeps Pacific on road

From staff reports

Matthew Young took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and struck out eight Saturday, throwing his first complete game this season, as Whitworth defeated Pacific 9-1 in the second game, sweeping a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Young (3-2), a right-handed junior from Tigard, Oregon, lost his no-hitter on Eli Wisdom’s one-out single in the ninth and finished with a two-hitter. Tyler Bailey provided the Pirates’ punch; the senior third baseman went 4 for 4 with two doubles, drove in five runs and scored a sixth. Ben Wintringer, Taylor Poffenroth and Liam Fitzpatrick each drove in a run for Whitworth (6-9, 3-2 NWC).

In the opener, Fitzpatrick’s sacrifice fly in the 12th drove in Wintringer with the winning run in a 5-4 victory. Connor Grydtal (1-2) picked up the win, throwing two innings of shutout ball. Fitzpatrick and Poffenroth both went 2 for 5 with a double; Bailey, Wintringer and Jaxsen Sweum also drove in runs.

The games, in which Whitworth batted last as the “home” team, were moved from Spokane because of unplayable conditions at Merkel Field. The teams play again at Pacific (12-4, 6-1) on Sunday.

Texas A&M 14, Gonzaga 2: The No. 20 Aggies (14-3) scored seven runs in the fourth inning and tacked on five more in the eighth, blowing open a tight game to defeat the Bulldogs (5-7) in College Station, Texas.

Mac Lardner took the loss, giving up 10 hits and nine runs, all earned, in 3 1/3 innings. Third baseman Ernie Yake, right fielder Troy Johnston and second baseman Mason Marenco had two hits apiece for GU, and Yake and center fielder Guthrie Morrison drove in runs. Ty Coleman homered and drove in five runs for Texas A&M. The three-game series ends Sunday.

Cal State Northridge 5, WSU 1: The Cougars (5-6) left nine runners on base and fell to the Matadors (8-7) in Pullman.

Washington State managed just five hits; Danny Sinatro drove in Brody Barnum for the lone run in the second. Wesley Moore (2-1) took the loss. CSUN scored twice in the first inning and added two more runs in the eighth. The three-game series wraps up on Sunday.
