WCC Tournament: Pepperdine stuns San Francisco, will face Gonzaga in semifinals

Gonzaga will face an unexpected opponent in the West Coast Conference Tournament semifinals.

No. 8-seeded Pepperdine thumped No. 4 San Francisco 89-72 on Saturday at the Orleans Arena. It was the Waves’ third win in three nights and their second straight upset.

Top-seeded Gonzaga (29-2) and Pepperdine (16-17) meet Monday at 6 p.m. The Zags won the only regular-season meeting 92-64 on Feb. 21 in Spokane. Rui Hachimura and Zach Norvell Jr. combined for 38 first-half points and Josh Perkins became the program’s career assists leader.

Sophomore point guard Colbey Ross drilled four of Pepperdine’s 14 3-pointers and scored 26 points against USF. Ross also had nine assists. Freshman forward Kessler Edwards added 14 points and seven rebounds.

San Francisco (21-10) lost its fourth straight game. Charles Minlend paced the Dons with 17 points. All-WCC guard Frankie Ferrari scored 12 points but made just 4 of 16 shots and committed six turnovers.

Pepperdine opened with a 61-53 win over No. 9 Pacific on Thursday. Ross hit a 3-pointer with 30.5 seconds remaining as the Waves edged No. 5 Loyola Marymount 68-65 on Friday.

In the other men’s third-round game, seventh-seeded San Diego routed third-seeded BYU 69-30 behind Isaiah Pineiro’s 25 points.

The Toreros (21-13) will face second-seeded Saint Mary’s in Monday’s other semifinal.

Women

Saint Mary’s 70, Loyola Marymount 38: Megan McKay and Sydney Raggio each notched double-doubles as the fourth-seeded Gaels (20-10) routed the fifth-seeded Lions (18-14) to earn a semifinal date with top-seeded Gonzaga (27-3).

The Bulldogs defeated Saint Mary’s in their two meetings this season by 12 and 14 points. Tipoff is set for noon Monday.

Pepperdine 87, Pacific 84: Yasmine Robinson-Bacote poured in 26 points and the third-seeded Waves (20-10) eliminated the sixth-seeded Tigers (18-12).

Barbara Sitanggan added 20 points for Pepperdine, which faces second-seeded BYU (23-6) at 2 p.m. Monday.

Brooklyn McDavid paced Pacific with 22 points.
