Women’s college basketball: Idaho falls in regular-season finale, still clinches top seed in Big Sky Tournament

A pair of losses turned into a positive for the Idaho Vandals on Saturday.

Madison Hinrichs scored 19 points as Idaho State held off a late Idaho rally for a regular-season-ending 73-67 victory on Saturday at the Cowan Spectrum in Moscow, Idaho.

Even with the loss, Idaho secured the outright Big Sky regular-season title and the top seed to next week’s Big Sky Tournament in Boise after Northern Colorado lost at Northern Arizona.

Mikayla Ferenz paced the Vandals (19-10) with 23 points, and Taylor Pierce scored 20.

Idaho will face either Northern Arizona or Sacramento State at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at CenturyLink Arena.

Weber State 70, Eastern Washington 66: Kayla Watkins notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Wildcats (6-24, 3-17) used a late surge to top the Eagles (10-19, 9-11) in Cheney.

Emily Drake led Weber State with 20 points and Shianne Johnson added 16.

Grace Kirscher paced EWU with 18 points off the bench, and Violet Kapri Morrow added 16.

The Eagles earned the sixth-seed into the Big Sky Tournament. They open against the No. 11-seeded Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Pac-12 Tournament

Alanna Smith had 21 points and 12 rebounds to help second-seeded Stanford beat No. 11-seed Washington 72-61 in the semifinals, ending the Huskies’ improbable postseason run in Las Vegas.

The Cardinal (27-4) will face top-seed Oregon on Sunday night for the championship. Stanford has won 12 of the 17 tournament titles, last doing so two years ago.

Amber Melgoza scored 32 points to lead the Huskies (11-21).

Oregon 88, UCLA 83 (OT): Ruthy Hebard scored 28 points to lift the top-seeded Ducks (29-3) over the fourth-seeded Bruins (20-12).

It’s the second consecutive year that the Ducks are in the championship game.

NWAC Tournament

Darian Mitchell scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Umpqua eliminated North Idaho 68-62 in the first round at Everett Community College.

Taylor Stricklin added 16 points and three assists for the Riverhawks (26-4), who earned the top seed out of the South Region.

Alivia Williams paced the Cardinals (20-9) with 20 points, while Heidi Sellman added 15 points.
