Gonzaga could make another run at Duke decommit Boogie Ellis

Gonzaga could be making a second run at highly rated 2019 guard Rejean “Boogie” Ellis.

Ellis has received his release from Duke, the ACC school confirmed Thursday. The Zags were among 10 programs that quickly made contact with the San Diego prep standout.

Washington, Georgetown, Virginia, Arizona, Oregon, Kansas, Memphis, UCLA and Vanderbilt also expressed interest in Ellis, according to an Adam Zagoria tweet.

Gonzaga was in the mix originally but didn’t make Ellis’ top five prior to his commitment to the Blue Devils last November. Point guard Tre Jones decided to return for his sophomore season, the Blue Devils signed prize recruit Cassius Stanley and they have additional backcourt options in the program.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Ellis, rated No. 36 by ESPN and No. 34 by 247sports, hit nearly 45 percent beyond the 3-point arc while averaging 17.2 points for the Oakland Soldiers on the Nike EYBL AAU circuit last year.

Gonzaga’s point guard position is open after the graduation of starter Josh Perkins and backup Geno Crandall. Rising sophomore guards Greg Foster Jr. and Joel Ayayi saw limited time last season. Wing Zach Norvell Jr. has declared for the NBA draft. GU’s incoming class includes 6-1 guard Brock Ravet.
