In Brief: Kitten Baby Shower Saturday will benefit Humane Society

From staff reports

The Spokane Humane Society will hold a Kitten Baby Shower on Saturday, 2-4 p.m., in the Big Red Barn behind the veterinary clinic. The shelter is at 6607 N. Havana St.

The event is a way to gather donated supplies for the little felines. Donors will be treated to cupcakes, punch and kitten cuddles.

The shelter seeks items such as KMR kitten formula in liquid or powder form, wet and dry kitten food, kitten bottles and nipples. Also needed are unscented baby wipes and baby toothbrushes, and A&D Ointment and lemon juice that can be used as flea remedy.

Soft, stuffed toys and microwaveable warming pads such as Snuggle Safe are requested.

Some of the dozens of kittens at the shelter and some with foster families are ready to be adopted.

The kitten adoption fee is $90, but the kitten snuggles are priceless, said Spokane Human Society development director Pia Hallenberg.

River cleanup volunteers will be treated to silent disco

The Spokane Riverkeeper and the Gonzaga University Office of Sustainability have teamed up to host a cleanup of the Spokane River along Mission Park combined with the groovy tunes of a silent disco – that is, music is streamed via wireless headphones.

“A clean river? Dancing? What’s not to love? I am happy to participate in unique events like this that benefit our river and promote a strong community,” Spokane City Councilwoman Kate Burke said in a news release.

The cleanup will be Friday from 2-5 p.m. Spokane Riverkeeper will provide garbage pickers, gloves and bags. The park is at 1208 E. Mission Ave.

The Gonzaga crew will have wireless headphones for volunteers. The music of local artists DJ Unifest, Lady Llamanade and Darrien Mack will be featured. Researchers from Gonzaga’s biology department will demonstrate the effects of plastics on water sources.
