Achievements: Area students earn academic honors

Honor rolls

Abigail Karlis of Fairfield was named to the president’s list for the spring 2019 term at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. A student must earn a perfect 4.0 GPA to qualify. Karlis also carried out the student leadership responsibilities of an official peer mentor during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Scholarships and academic honors

Garrison Colvin of Spokane was one of more than 500 University of Utah undergraduate students to showcase their research at the 2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 9. Colvin presented sensory feedback utilizing multi-channel electro-tactile stimulation on behalf of the department of bioengineering.

Gonzaga University graduates Loren Carrillo and James Vair both received Fulbright English Teaching Assistant grants, allowing them to teach abroad. The grants are part of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Carrillo will be an English teaching assistant at a middle school in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Vair will teach in Taipei, Taiwan. Both start on Aug. 1.

Senior Gonzaga University student Ivan Jimenez is one of three students statewide selected to receive the 2019 Governor’s Civic Leadership Award for his service and social justice activities. The award was presented with a $1,000 check at the Washington Campus Compact students Serving Washington Awards ceremony on April 19 at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Jimenez is majoring in engineering management.

Ashley Rockwell of Pullman was awarded the Jacqueline Boles Graduate Teaching Fellowship from Georgia State University in Atlanta. Rockwell is a sociology major pursuing a doctorate.

Graduation

Jennifer Wells of Pullman graduated from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, with a Master of Science degree in forensic science with a concentration in chemistry.

Madeline Jarvis of Greenacres graduated from Berry College in Rome, Georgia, with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science.
