SALT LAKE CITY – Briley Knight hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning and Utah rallied to defeat Washington State 6-4 Thursday at Smith’s Ballpark in the opener of a three-game series.
The Cougars (10-38-1, 2-22-1 Pac-12) twice overcame Utah leads before going in front 4-3 on Danny Sinatro’s RBI double in the sixth. Sinatro extended his hitting streak to seven games.
Knight’s shot off Davis Baillie (2-3) just cleared the wall in right to help the Utes (13-32, 5-23) snap an 11-game losing streak. Nick Caviglia (1-2) worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief and Zac McCleve struck out three in 1 1/3 innings for his fourth save.
Rob Teel had a two-run single in the second to wipe out an early Utah lead. Kyle Manzardo had an RBI double and was one of five Cougars with two hits, pushing his multiple-hit streak to four games.
Chase Fernlund knocked in two with a single in the first for the Utes, and Oliver Dunn went 3 for 4.
The teams resume their series on Friday.
