State 4A track and field: Mead’s Jordynn Hutchinson continues family trend of winning shot put titles

As Mead sophomore Jordynn Hutchinson received her medal on Saturday after winning the State 4A girls shot put title, an announcer at Mount Tahoma HS emphatically broadcast her name through the venue’s sound system.

Three steps down the podium was her freshman sister, Emily Hutchinson, who tried to match that volume.

“That’s my sister!” Emily proudly exclaimed after placing fourth in the same event.

This was a familiar scene for the Hutchinson family.

Jordynn, who recorded a personal-best throw of 43 feet, 3 inches, became the fourth of the Hutchinson sisters to win a state shot put title for Mead.

Older siblings Corissa, Ashley and Courtney all won state shot put titles and earned Division I track scholarships.

Jordynn, who is eight years younger than the last Hutchinson to win state (Courtney), said she remembers watching the state meet as a young child and seeing her sisters win.

“I’ve always wanted to do that, and to finally actually be able to – it feels great,” Jordynn said.

Emily, who had a toss of 40-8, was happy for Jordynn.

“I’m sure excited for her, because I’ve always been behind her anyway,” Emily said. “I kind of expected her to win, and that pushes me to go harder.

She wasn’t the only Greater Spokane Leaguer to win a title.

Central Valley’s Ahna Duggan, Molly McCormick, Marissa Orrino and Aly Tolman teamed up to win the 4A 1,600 relay (3 minutes, 59.19 seconds).

Duggan also placed fourth in the 400 (58.10).

Lewis and Clark senior Sativa Rogers, who won the long jump title on Friday, placed third in the 100 (12.33), helped the Tigers’ 800 relay place second (1:43.82) and had a hand in their fourth-place 400 relay (49.15).

LC took seventh with 30 points, and CV tied for eighth with 24 points.

CV’s Kylah Lopez took first in the girls ambulatory 200 (47.25). The Bears won the combined wheelchair/ambulatory team title.

In the 4A boys meet, Ferris sophomore Cole Omlin placed fourth in the long jump (22-5), and Mead’s Eddy Vasilyev placed fourth in the pole vault (14-0).
