Man arrested after police chase through Spokane has 26 convictions, police say

A man led police on a high-speed chase on Thursday morning that snaked west from Spokane Valley to north Spokane, ending in a short pursuit on foot.

The suspect, Shane P. Wilson, 42, is a 26-time convicted felon, according to aSpokane County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Sgt. Terry Preuninger, Spokane Police Department spokesman, said Wilson was arrested near Nevada Street and Sanson Avenue. Wilson ditched his car, took off on foot and was apprehended shortly after when a witness pointed him out to officers.

“I actually arrested him,” Preuninger said. “Grabbed him and put handcuffs on him.”

Several minutes earlier, Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies followed Wilson, reportedly driving a black Infiniti sedan, after they responded to a suspicious vehicle call near Third Avenue and Havana Street, said Cpl. Mark Gregory, sheriff’s office spokesman.

The Spokane Police Department also received calls about a man possibly pointing a weapon at a motorist and other people. The end of a weapon was visible inside the suspect’s car, Preuninger said.

Police said say Wilson led them on a chase through Spokane Valley at speeds of up to 70 mph before heading north on Freya Street and turning west on Wellesley Avenue, deputies reported. He was apprehended shortly after heading south on Nevada.

Deputies towed the vehicle and plan to get a search warrant.

At some point during the car chase, a female passenger was either thrown from or exited the suspect’s vehicle, police said. She is being interviewed.

There were no injuries reported.

Wilson’s prior convictions include attempt to elude, possession of stolen property, robbery, possession of a controlled substance, burglary and theft, according to the news release.
