Area roundup: Gonzaga’s varsity eight boats place fifth during first day of NCAA Championships

The Gonzaga women’s rowing team finished fifth in the varsity eight and second varsity eight races Friday during the first day of the NCAA Championships at the Indianapolis Rowing Center.

The varsity eight posted its best time of the season, timing 6 minutes, 31.404 seconds. A good start and solid final 500 meters helped secured a spot in the C/D semifinal race Saturday. Texas won in 6:07.284.

The Bulldogs’ second varsity eight used a strong final 250 meters to finish in 6:50.304 and also qualify for the C/D semifinal. California won in 6:24.858.

GU’s varsity four completed the day, finishing in sixth place in 7:43.125. The Bulldogs will also race in the C/D semifinals.

Baseball

Tennessee Wesleyan 6, St. Thomas (Fla.) 2: Cole Bellair pitched 6 1/3 sharp innings and Braden Mosley drove in two runs as the top-seeded Bulldogs (56-10) defeated the Bobcats (49-14) in the NAIA World Series championship in Lewiston.
