Driver killed in police chase was diabetic

A driver who crashed into a log truck and died while being chased by sheriff’s deputies was a Post Falls man with severe diabetes, friends say.

Authorities identified Daniel James Marinovich, 50, late Tuesday after an autopsy, which concluded he died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Investigators are trying to determine if a medical condition may have been a factor, said sheriff’s Lt. Steve Barbieri. But a former coworker of Marinovich’s believes the only logical explanation for his erratic driving is that he suffered a diabetic episode while traveling from his job in Deer Park.

“I guess I’d have a hard time seeing him as a hardened criminal,” said Vicki Shafer. “I can sure see him going down the road, being out of it and not even realizing.”

Witnesses sought in WSP v. semi crash

A Washington State Patrol trooper remains hospitalized in Spokane after his patrol car was rear-ended by a semi-truck on Highways 395 near Ritzville.

Dean T. Burt, 53, a 19-year veteran, was stopped on a paved portion of the shoulder with his patrol car's emergency lights flashing when a northbound semi-truck driven by James A. Helms, 54, of Phoneix, Ariz., left the road and crashed into Burt's patrol car about 5:45 p.m., according to WSP.

Helms' truck then went through the median and came to a rest in the southbound lane of the highway, WSP said.

The crash remains under investigation, said Trooper Troy Briggs. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash “or any event leading up to or following the crash” is asked to call Detective Sergeant Jerry Cooper at (360) 805-1192 or Detective Greg Wilcoxson at (360) 805-1195.

Burt's injuries are not considered life threatening. He was taken to East Adams Rural Hospital in Ritzville before being flown by helicopter to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

Tips sought on highway safety sign thefts

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for tips that identify the thieves who stole batteries from construction zone signs in the Highway 395 and North Spokane Corridor.

The thefts, which occurred between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, rendered the two reader boards useless until a construction company paid $1,200 to replace them.

The reader boards, one located at Hastings Road and the other at Dartford Road, alert motorists to lane restrictions and other roadway hazards created by the construction.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or submit tips online. Tipsters don’t have to leave their name to collect a reward but should leave a code name or number.
